At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp near Manassas Junction. Complains that Lile, his wife, should write to him more often. Notes that his company crossed the Rapidan and continued on to Orange Court House. Further discusses troop movements, noting his corps is putting up winter quarters at his present location. Written in pencil.
