At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Miller writes to his wife four days after the Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg). Writes, "I suppose the folks that was here to see the Battle field had [a sad tale], and I must say they saw a horrible sight, such an one as i hope and pray to god none of us may ever see again..."
