At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from camp near Alexandria. Ink is faded. "...you asked in your letter whether we had lost confidence in Genl McClellan No Dear Lile if there is a man in the world this army loves it is him, the Reason they are down on him, they think he ought to move faster, Run his men into Battle hap hazard and have some more Bull Run Slaughters... he is a Democrat that is the [sore]... i was at the House where Ellsworth was killed the Poll is still on the House where he tore the flag off..."
