At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cabinet portrait of Delavan Bates in uniform by the Snyder Studio. Inscription on verso reads: "Brig. Gen. Delavan Bates/MOH [Medal of Honor] at Crater/121st NY Infantry/Cabinet/Signed $125.00." Bates was Union Brevet Brig. Gen., 30th U.S. Colored Infantry. Bust portrait in white stetson. Signed on image.
