At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to his aunt, Mrs. George A. Frick (Rebecca Frick). Reports that his company was ordered to go to Charlottesville but was then ordered to Louisa Court House to assume command of Louisa and Hanover counties. Writes that he is currently commander of two posts, Provost Marshall for two counties, and Superintendent of Freedmen for both [Louisa and Hanover counties].
