At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his sister-in-law that he and others were distressed upon receiving her letters and two notes from Mary Blatchford regarding an accident that involved Mr. Blatchford (possibly Richard Blatchford, Webster's close friend and business associate). The back of this document includes a note and a docket, likely by Harriette Story Paige. 1 April 1847 written on this document in pencil at a later date.
