At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A note that once accompanied the Jeffery family seal containing the history and provenance of the seal. Includes short anectdote about a Mr. Jeffery who was captured in the War of 1812 while wearing the family seal. The British officer in command, who also was named Jeffery, recognized the seal as his own and granted the former his freedom. The seal is housed separately from the note.
