At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appears to allude to the count of electoral votes for president. Declares, "I have just got out of bed (10 1/2 hrs) having got home from the final count at 4 1/2 this morning. Tired to the bone." Letter written on House of Representatives stationery.
