At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox recommends a Mr. Payton for work. Mentions Payton's "great distress owing to some peculiarly unhappy circumstances in his family," and suggests there might be an available post "within the Quartermaster or Commissary[']s line" under General Lincoln's patronage. Letter written at the time of Shays' rebellion. Signed as Secretary of War.
