Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tomlinson requests that the committee pay Thomas Murring for the use of a horse for an express, by order of General David Wooster. Caleb Hall signs, certifying that "the Above Horse was Impressed for I could not Git a Horse any other way for the man." Docketed 18 June 1777 by Gideon [Herford?].
