At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders Jacob Isaacks be paid "Four hundred and forty eight pounds old Tenor, being for Linnen Checks, and Charge the same to the Colony." Signed by Jonathan Nichols, Thomas Cranston and Peter Bours as the Committee of War. Verso signed by Jacob Isaacs. Jonathan Nichols was deputy governor of Rhode Island. Thomas Richardson was the general treasurer of Rhode Island. Peter Bours was the speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1757-1759. Jacob Isaacks was a Jewish merchant and broker in Newport.
