Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists saddlery supply orders of General Cholmondeley (1767) and Lieut. Gen. Elliot (1767-71), and their respective staffs. Also included some loose papers slipped in the leaves. Inside the front cover is: an inventory from a saddler and coach and harness maker, an inventory of furniture dated June 1771 signed by William Maslist and James Baker, and inventory for Elliot dated September 1771, and two short notes. At leaf eight there is a torn out piece of newspaper. At leaf 85 there is an inventory for leather goods. At leaf 86 is an autograph letter signed by Jonathan St. Clair expressing satisfaction with Parker's work with the regiment. The letter to Parker is the source of attribution for the account book. Approximately half the book is filled with blank sheets. It is foliated with vellum binding. Parker lived in London, England. Fragile.
