At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of a letter to Thanet in which Gates appeals to Britain to recognize American independence. Cites the American victory at Saratoga and foretells "Calamities which England will sustain" if the war is continued. A version of this letter was printed in the April 29, 1778 edition of the Pennsylvania Evening Post.
