At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists fresh beef delivered by Shadrack Ham to seamen returning from the Penobscot Expedition. Ships listed include the Hector People, Black Prince, the Warren, the Putnam, the Monmouth, and sundry vessels. The Penobscot Expedition (July-August 1779) was a failed American offensive against the British fortress at Penobscot (present-day Maine).
