At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as Auditor General. Reports that the Committee on the Treasury has requested Clarke to pay strict attention to making monthly returns to the Treasury Board for monies received from the Continental Loan Office certificates. States that several commissioners have neglected to do this and it has caused many inconveniences. The Continental Loan Offices administered loans to the Continental Treasury to help finance the war effort. Clarke was the Commissioner of the Continental Loan Office in Rhode Island.
