At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Carte de visite of an unknown Confederate general with beard. Stars around collar of uniform. With pen strokes added to his beard and hair. Pencil note on back (cropped), "This is a very indifferent picture -- a poor trait of the original as the artist in attempting to improve it has spoiled it completely. I send it however as I have no other." Possibly the handwriting of Mary C. Lee.
