At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Explains that the United States Coast Survey is attempting to "make us acquainted with the bottom of the Ocean, as thoroughly as we already are with the surface of the Earth." Requests a contribution of $20,000 from Massachusetts Governor Claflin to finance the preservation, for scientific purposes, of specimens discovered in the course of the surveys dredging and fishing along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
