Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by A. Williams and Company. Criticizes Andrew Johnson for taking over congressional authority and compares him to Napoleon Bonaparte. Discusses the constitutionality of the reconstruction acts. Accuses the Democratic Party of having a "rebel program" in which Southern rebels will attempt to regain everything they lost in the Civil War. Warns against the possibilty of another successful rebellion by rebel states.
