At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written as former president. Jackson argues that Polk adheres to "Jeffersonian democracy" which makes him an acceptable alternative candidate to Martin Van Buren (who had been defeated for re-election in 1840). He sees Polk's nomination assured because of his stand on the Texas question.
