At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by H. L. Scott. Partial docket reads "[Gene]ral Orders No. 345, [illegible] of 1st Lt. Devlin of the [illegible] Marine Corps." and "...Clarke...Brigade." Proceedings of the court martial of John S. Devlin on charges of drunkenness on duty, conduct unbecoming an officer, violation of the 25th Article of War (he challenged a superior to a fight), and breach of arrest. Colonel N.S.
