At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Johnson asks Grant to "inform Major General C. C. Augur, by telegraph, that he is authorized and empowered to act as a member of the Indian Peace Commission during the absence of Lieut. General Sherman, and direct him to meet the Commission at Fort Harker on the eighth instant." Letter written on lined Executive Mansion stationery. Noted Grant as ad interim Secretary of War.
