At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

L. J. Cist replies to a letter initially directed to Representative Henry Taylor Blow of Missouri requesting Lincoln's autograph for the benefit of the Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair. In response, President Lincoln writes "I am glad to give it, in the hope that it may contribute, in some small degree at least, to the relief and comfort of our brave soldiers."
