At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Galvez as the Governor of Louisiana who lead several expeditions against the British along the Gulf Coast in support of the American Revolution. Document lauding Gilberto Guillemard, his second in command and chief military engineer, who recently died under Galvez's command. Praises his second in command for assistance in defeating the British at Mobile, Pensacola, and along the Mississippi River. Written in an attractive italic clerical hand. Red wax seal is extent.
