At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: He has just returned from New York City, where he worked with Secretary Chase to compare excise taxes of the U.S. and foreign countries. He refers to her article, "Caucuss," describing educational qualifications for the elective franchise of states with free schools. He describes his roommate, a past American Consul to Java, Rev. Israel Dichl.
