At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He hasn't heard from her in some time, due to her illness, and he is anxious for full details. He describes his work with the Senate, introducing his "inventions in projectiles" and inventions of portable cots for officers and field hospitals. He includes a poem, "Nearer Home" by Phoebe Cary, with the intent to have Emma publish it.
