At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Hattie Figures from Henry S. Figures dated Camp Ala., February 19, 1862. Mentions that he requested shoes and $25. Henry tells his sister he has heard a rumor that there had been a "big fight in Kentucky" in which they the Confederates had lost 11,000 men, and Generals Beauregard and Pillow had been cut off.
