Countersigned by Washington's military secretary, Jonathan Trumbull, and Adjutant James Bradford. Matross' discharge came shortly after the end of the American Revolution. His service began 10 March 1781. With a nineteenth century note on the loan of this document to an International Exposition by Mrs. William Cummings Story Lawrence of Long Island, New York.
