At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Washington's military secretary, Jonathan Trumbull, and Adjutant James Bradford. Matross' discharge came shortly after the end of the American Revolution. His service began 10 March 1781. With a nineteenth century note on the loan of this document to an International Exposition by Mrs. William Cummings Story Lawrence of Long Island, New York. Partially printed.
