Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Authorizes the transfer "from the Appropriation for the Pay of Subsistence of the Marine Corps to the Appropriation for Clothing the Marine Corps, The sum of Ten Thousand Dollars." Permitted by virtue of the May 1, 1820 "Act further to amend the several Acts for the establishment and Regulation of the Treasury, War and Navy Departments."
