At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Greeley tries to discourage Smith from founding a woman's newspaper as a poor business decision and discusses differences between business and reform. He concludes by preferring that they be "former acquaintances" rather than "friends" or "enemies." With a docket on page 1 by recipient: "full of conceited assumptions by no means warranted by my communication to him. E.O.S."
