Quint, Alonzo Hall, 1828-1896 The Potomac and the Rapidan. Army notes, from the failure at Winchester to the reënforcement of Rosecrans. 1861-3

Written by Quint as the chaplain of the Second Massachusetts Infantry. Published in Boston by Crosby and Nichols and in New York by O.S. Felt. Electrotyped at the Boston Stereotype Foundry at 4 Spring Lane. Quint says the book came about from his correspondence to the newspaper "The Congregationalist." Says it is more than a reprint because he has omitted some things and added others from private notes. Says "[i]n no sense do these pages assume to be a history. They contain merely the frankest record of impressions received by an eye witness, or places and scenes in our eventful campaigns." Divided into 15 chapters and covers from September 1861 through 1863. Pages 399-407 contains detailed index. Front of book has a foldout map, with color, of the Eastern Theatre consisting of parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Map published by permission "From the Map of the Coast Survey Office." Inside front cover has bookplate of "P.A. Steers N.Y." First page has a pencil signature of "John A. Ubsdell Sept. 1865." Pebble-grained purple cloth cover, stamped with gilt on spine for title.
