At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Created by the Joint committee on dedication of Chickamauga and Chattanooga national military park and compiled by H.V. Boynton. Printed by the Government Printing Office by order of the Senate in the 54th Congress. The military park was created to commemorate the 1863 battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Report No. 637.
