At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Talks about letters he has received from families and businesses pledging their support and encouragement for him. Discusses problems the party and the nation are facing. Remarks, "We are at peace with the world; but the fight goes on. Our frontiers of today are economic, not geographic. Our enemies are the forces of privilege and greed within our borders."
