At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph of William McKinley dater March 17, 1896. A Bas-relief bust portrait, of McKinley facing right. McKinley's face has been raised and contoured to create a 3-dimensional illusion. It is signed on the lower portion of the frame. There is a tag glued onto the back of the frame with torn lower left corner. On the tag is "Bas-relief Photographs/ U. G. Duffield & Co.,/ General Agents,/ [O]dd Fellows Temple. Philadelphia." Typed in a smaller typeface, in the lower left corner where the tag has been torn reads, "Patented March 17, 1896,/ Other Patents Pending." Photograph framed in cardboard.
