At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph of Grover Cleveland dated circa 1896. It is a formal portrait, with Cleveland facing out, looking left. The photograph is mounted with a red border it is signed by Cleveland below the photograph. Also printed in red in the lower left corner is "Arony", with the address 87 Union Square, N.Y. in the lower right corner. This indicates that the photo was likely printed by the T. Arony Studio.
