Book of reports and state papers sent to the 1st session of the 18th Congress. Each report or group of papers is paginated separately. Contains first printing of Monroe Doctrine (report #2), which is 15 pages long. Given to Congress on 2 December 1823 the doctrine precluded European intervention in any part of the Western Hemisphere. In original sheep binding. Light rubbing and periodic foxing.

John Quincy Adams explains his 1804 opposition to a bill supported by General Samuel Smith that would further protect U.S. sailors from British impressment. Refutes Smith's suggestion that Adams' position justifies British impressment. Argues that the legislation did not discriminate between U.S. and British sailors on American vessels and would strain the relationship between the two nations. Claims that the bill's passing would cause the question of war to arise immediately.

Barber, Andrew Jackson: A Portrait Study, 1991).

Docketed by Ronaldson. Jefferson compares the specimens (probably Ronaldson and Binney no. 1) to those used in a book in the mid-eighteenth century, and is cheered by the prospect of human progress. Ronaldson-Binney's first typeface was the first typeface designed in America and became the basis for "Monticello" the font used for printing the modern edition of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson.

The front cover of an autograph and correspondence album (approximately 80 items) assembled by Scottish poet, Thomas Pringle, with letters from poets, novelists, essayists, and other writers. The letters in this collection were disbound prior to acquisition by the Gilder Lehrman Collection. They are itemized alphabetically in the range of GLC00496.128-.276, intermittently. Pringle was a Scottish poet and became Secretary of the (British) Anti-Slavery Society in 1827, and some of these letters have come from his correspondence.

Waugh, a reverend, writes to Pringle in Deptford, a township in London. In the first paragraph, which is struck, Waugh insists that Pringle meet Mrs. Gregory. He introduces Mr. Elliot, who bears this letter. Waugh hopes that Elliot will be useful in Pringle's society (possibly the Anti-Slavery Society). Notes Elliot's acquaintances, referring to his travels on the European continent and his association with James Montgomery, who wrote the poem "The Wanderer of Switzerland." Letter is attached to a brown paper frame.
