Replies to a letter he received from Washington on the same day. Refers to another letter Washington enclosed, from General [Ezekiel] Cornell. Cornell's letter referred to lead and cartridge expected to arrive from Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. Further discusses gathering ammunition from other states, noting "the demands from the southward and westward so great as to claim the utmost economy..." Notes that General Duportail applied to the Quartermaster General for [artillery gun] platforms. Knox's retained draft.

Humphreys, an aide-de-camp for George Washington, informs Knox that Washington "thinks in the present state of our Ammunition not more than 15,000 of the Cartridges at Succasanna can be spared to the State of New Jersey..." Asks Knox to issue the order pertaining to the cartridges. Relates that Washington will also inform [William] Livingston, Governor of New Jersey, of the same. In a post script, instructs Knox to send the order in favor of Elias Woodruff.

Grayson signs as a Commissioner of the Board of War. Docket appears to be Samuel Shaw's hand, thus it is likely this document was directed to Henry Knox. "The Board have directed the estimates to be made out immediately of the articles necessary to be purchased also of the transportation..." Assures Knox the Board will do everything in their power to facilitate the measures of George Washington.

Lists clothing shipped on board Captain Hardie's ship, Olimpe, at Brest, France 15 June 1781. A separate list indicates artillery, ordnance, and camp equipage on board the Cybelle, ordnance stores on the ship Ruise, and medicines and instruments on board the Active. Shipped by order of [John] Laurens, special minister to France.

Certifies that Post has served as Captain of Artillery Artificers stationed at Fredericksburgh, New York, since 11 January 1777, and receives fifty dollars per month in pay. Asserts that Post is entitled to his depreciation in pay.

Shaw attests that Post is entitled to his pay.

Informs the Board that George Washington has directed him to delay the transport of cannon and powder to New Windsor and Kings Ferry, New York, until [8] August. Contains a note written on page three, written by Knox's aide Samuel Shaw, in which Knox requests sheepskins. Also docketed by Shaw. Written at Philipsburgh, New York (near present-day Tarrytown).
