Title: to Richard B. Winder

Wirz seeks information to implicate "the authorities at Richmond" on conditions at Andersonville, suggesting that he is being prosecuted so that "the big men, such as Cooper Seddon, Jeff Davis" can be prosecuted. Indicates that providing such information "I think it will save me, at any rate you." Passed to Winder's nearby prison cell, with Winder's unsigned autograph reply in pencil: "I knew of nothing except the reports from the prison, the reports of inspecting officers & newspaper statements." Written on scrap of lined paper.

Captain Wirz, the commandant of Andersonville Prison, tells Colonel Gibbs that there are no mules fit for transport but grants him authority to impress any mules needed. Letter written at Camp Sumter, also known as Andersonville Prison.

Title: [Special order: Arrest warrant from a Confederate state military prison]

Orders that John Thomas be brought to the prison "dead or alive." Signed by Wirz as Sergeant of Post, at the Confederate Military Prison at Tuscaloosa, before he was promoted to Commandant of Andersonville Prison, where he gained notoriety. Accompanied by a seller's undated manuscript note describing Wirz as "The Demon of Andersonville." One black and white bust engraving of Wirz included.

Title: [Endorsement of a request for medical leave for M.E. Sperry]

Signed by Wirz, Sperry, J.W. Hails, and "Jno. S. Bransford." Sperry, a clerk in the Adjutant's Office, writes to Captain Chapman, the Adjutant of the Post, to request a leave of seven days. An autograph note below his request by a surgeon, J.W. Hails, attests that Sperry is unfit for duty and needs to cease work for a period of seven days. Captain Wirz, the commandant of Andersonville Prison, approved the request on the verso, signing "H. Wirz." Also on the verso is an autograph note by Bransford pertaining to a transfer, dated 24 May 1864. Has a stamp (and mirror image from folding)…
