Written in a secretarial hand and signed by Smith for the Chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting to Captain Kitty of the USS "Roanoke." References Kitty's letter of 24 September. Wants a survey made of the furniture of the "Roanoke," and if it is condemned, new furniture will be ordered. Written on Navy Department, Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting stationary. Written by Captain Smith of the ship "Columbus" to Secretary of the Navy Upshur. Recommends Horace Watson, age 14 and a half, for the office of midshipman. Says his grandfather, Master Watson, played distinguished role in the Revolution, and that his father H. H. Watson was a captain in the army during the War of 1812.
