At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in a secretarial hand and signed by Smith for the Chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting to Captain Kitty of the USS "Roanoke." References Kitty's letter of 24 September. Wants a survey made of the furniture of the "Roanoke," and if it is condemned, new furniture will be ordered. Written on Navy Department, Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting stationary.
