Comments on Napier's conduct during the Abyssinian campaign, "He was extremely polite to several of our army officers who visited Calcutta, Delhi etc. ... In his conduct of the Abyssinian Campaign, ... He organised, conducted that Campaign, and closed all its barriers[?] without a change of plan or of Commander. an event that proved him a perfect organizer & General." He comments "out here on the Mississippi we don't fear Kaiser or Pope." Further comments that a baseball game interests the people more than "a cardinal's encyclical" in this jocular introduction.

" Advises Colton on possible routes for continuation of the railroad through Arizona. Hopes that the railroad will increase trade and secure peace between the United States and Mexico.

Sherman would like to celebrate, but must continue to fight. He comments on the upcoming movements of troops. He explains some strategy to work toward his goal of reclaiming the Mississippi for the Union. Written from a camp near Bear Creek.

Describes a dilemma Ulysses S. Grant relayed to him during his presidency. Grant apparently agreed to find a position for a veteran fired by his postmaster General Creswell, but was not aware the former soldier was severely disabled by war wounds…

Sherman defends the terms of surrender he gave to General Joseph Johnston, discussing his "Memorandum" (i.e., Johnston's surrender agreement), and claiming the document was written "quickly." Sherman writes that "Sam [U.S. Grant] never saw or heard about it." He further notes that it was "a mere naked memorandum for the new President [Andrew Johnson] to manipulate and give me what I had a right to ask some definite idea of the status of the surrendered army." " Assures Andrew that he will do whatever is in his authority to protect Massachusetts citizens.
