Encloses recruit returns (not included). Says he enclosed enlistments, vouchers, and accounts and forwarded them to Mr. Howell. He was directed to deliver them to Knox. Heard they were received. Lyman says there was a balance due to him on the accounts he forwarded. Is in need of that money or recruitment money.

Lyman informs Captain Bryant that "my Dear Wife and your Sister," Sarah Mason, had died. Gives the details of Sarah's illness and death. She was pregnant and died of a fever not long after giving birth to a son that lived only a short time. Provides a long and melancholy account of the period surrounding her death. Describes his feelings over his loss and worries over how "mama in her advanced age" will bear the pain. The relation to Bryant was through his second-wife, Hannah Mason. Written from Presque Isle, which is now Erie, Pennsylvania.

In the month after his wife's death, Lyman writes details about seeing and interacting with his young son, James. Discusses traveling to Pennsylvania with his late wife, their plans, and her sickness. Discusses various plans in the wake of her death. Filled with poignant and melancholy sentiments: "My hopes & future prospect are blasted I have lost a kind and tender mother a pleasant & agreeable companion and as a domestic wife exceeded but by few - poor little James is now sitting and playing by me...the sight of him brings to mind what has lately passed and what will pass on all…
