A small collection of letters written by Captain William Logan to his wife, Sarah Logan (whom he often refers to as Sallie). They provide a detailed account of his brigade's journey, which is commanded by Generals Amiel Whipple and Samuel Carroll. There are letters written from Massachusetts, Virginia, and Washington D.C. The last letter is written from The Georgetown Seminary Hospital in Washington, D.C., when Logan fell ill and was unable to move forward with the rest of his brigade. Talks of having a "negro." Reports to his wife that they arrived at the regiment on the 15th and they marched for 33 hours without stopping for more than 20 minutes at a time. Writes to her "I had charge of four hundred convolesents to Washington..." Tells her that he has not had a meal "put it all together" in four days and that 13 men died of sun stroke, possibly on the march. Informs her that her brother Clement is in the hospital. Informs her that his throat is worse than ever and he has a bad cough. He hopes to join his regiment in ten to twelve days. Writes to his wife that he has not heard from her in over four weeks. Tells her that her brother Clement has returned to the company and is well. Asks that she write to him and inquires about the money he sent. Reports in great detail about the harvest, describing apples, cherries, and other fruits and vegetables. Notes that "my health is not improving and I now weigh one hundred and forty pounds last winter I weighed one hundred and eighty nine." Also informs her that he is in command of the picket.
