Partially printed document signed by Captain Sydney Smith Lee. Docket added 1 December 1864 reads: "Be pleased to assume command of the C.S. Iron-Clad 'Richmond'." Co-signed by John Mitchell aboard the Virginia. Sidney Smith Lee, older brother of Robert E. Lee, had accompanied Perry to Japan in 1853 and served as one of the early commandants of the U.S. Naval Academy Lee was commissioned as a commander in the Confederate Navy in 1861 and promoted to captain and chief of the Confederate Navy Bureau of Orders and Detail in 1864.

Includes penciled directions on how to get to Richmond on verso. With autograph note signed by Captain Lynch confirming that Maury reported 26 February 1865. Sidney (or Sydney) Smith Lee was Robert E. Lee's older brother. A commander in the Confederate States Navy, S. Lee was chief of the Bureau of Orders and Detail at the time he signed this document.

To his brother, Charles Carter Lee, giving news of his son Fitzhugh Lee's serious wound at the Third Battle of Winchester on 9/19/1864. "My dear Fitz was slightly wounded in the fight near 'Winchester,' Fitz has been sick for 11 days and was not well when he went into the fight… had two horses shot under him.... His poor Nelly Gray was wounded so bad he had to abandon her-… He had her in the first Manassas fight.… But alas-she has gone.… My dear boy wrote to me after he was wounded and said he had done his best....the ball that struck him went through a thigh and through the saddle and killed…
