At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders from the Confederate Navy Department releasing Maury from active duty at Wilmington Station due to poor health. Sidney (or Sydney) Smith Lee was Robert E. Lee's older brother. A commander in the Confederate States Navy, S. Lee was chief of the Bureau of Orders and Detail at the time he signed this document.
