Writes that he has received Ward's letter from last month. Thanks him for the information respecting the military stores. Relates that when he came into office, the stores were under the charge of Mr. [John] Stagg in Providence. Has always intended to move them to Springfield but the "want of money has hitherto prevented - I supposed having never heard the contrary that he was faithful and trust worthy. If otherwise I beg you would inform me in confidence and I will request Colonel [likely Jeremiah] Olney or some other person, to take charge of them."

Instead, suggests that Walley buy a plot of land in Maine for his son-in-law, daughter, and their nine children.

Hopes to be able to visit them in Plymouth the next time he is in the area. Express his concern over some "unsettled business" between Duer and Walker which might make it difficult to proceed. Hopes Walker can assure that Duer will assist this process.

Claims it is not from inattention that he has delayed responding to Walker's letter of 20 August. Reports that he was struck with a "unremitting fever & have just been able to be abroad." Agrees with him about selling lands and claims he is "expecting some plan from Mr. Duer for that object." Says that Duer will send him the provisional agreement to sell the lands to Madame de la Val and Mr. de la Roche. Mentions it is very important to get them to travel from New York to Boston in order to see the lands "and make the establishment before the Winter sets in."

Mentions he has repeatedly asked Duer for copies of several notes but that Duer has been unable to locate them. Also discusses Madam de Leval's intention of applying to the Massachusetts Legislature regarding her land claim. Believes if that were to happen the contract will likely be lost. Second part is a copy of a receipt written in Knox's hand from William Duer. Confirms Duer's receipt of money from Knox.

She is trying to change the agreement, which may go into effect before Walker's has to make payments. At present she wants $40,000, which Knox thinks she will not get.
