Encloses an account of the cannons and other ordnance Major Bauman is to bring down to the Chesapeake from Baltimore. Coordination with other ordnance vessels will be organized by George Washington and another General [Mordecai] Gist. Also discusses some munitions in Frederick, Maryland and gives additional instructions. The account appears on the back page. The ordnance was for the siege of Yorktown, which began later that month.

Written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp, and signed by Shaw for Knox. Advises Faesch that Captain [William] Stevens will soon be arriving with a small party to reproof shells, and will be bringing "a section of a French 8 inch shell, with an order from the Secretary at War to cast three thousand of that construction." Explains, "You may remember that I mentioned to you that we found some French 8 inch howitzers at York in Virginia. Writes to Faesch, a metalworker building arms and ammunition for the army, to discuss the amount and sizes of shells necessary to fit the French howitzers the army has procured. Mentions that he has been in contact with General Benjamin Lincoln regarding the amount of shells to order, but asks Faesch to write to him to get a final decision on the subject. Also suggests that Faesch imprint a letter "F" on one side of these shells and the letters "U.S." on the other.

Adds that Captain Joseph [Hardy] has been employed in the Treasury Department for eight years and will make an excellent assistant for Eveleigh.

Replies to Eustis's letters written on the 17th and 23rd (see GLC02437.04479). Discusses the situation of the invalids, particularly the invalid pensioners. Upon reviewing the subject with other general members, believes it to be impracticable to obtain a new inspection of the invalids. States that "the subjects of invalid pensions had better remain on its present footing for the following reasons..." Goes on to list the reasons, most of which deal with how the individual states handle their own invalids and finances. Also discusses his legal trouble with the Waldo patent.

Tells Mr. Dunton to use the most durable and cheapest material on the basement. Provides further instructions on what materials to use on the rest of the house. A piece of the letter is missing.

Marked "copy." Includes several letters. The first, to Mr. [Life] Wilson, provides instructions for him to build a saw mill in the St. Georges region of Maine using lumber from Mr. James Waller Head. The second note, to Mr. Head, asks him to provide lumber to Mr. Wilson. The third, to Mr. Dunton, asks Dunton to provide Wilson with supplies. The last, apparently to Mr. Vose, provides a variety of instructions about a canal-building project.
