Eppes planned to sell his estate which Jefferson wanted to buy. Jefferson also mentions that indebtedness from his Washington residence has been nearly paid. Eppes rejected the proposal. At the end of the letter, Jefferson talks about the plans of Peter Carr (his nephew) for "enlarging the plan of his school" -- this is the Albemarle Academy which became the University of Virginia.

Collateral items: print of Jefferson; a photo, "Ye Old Mint;" a print titled "The Coin Room;" a commemorative medal with the words "David Rittenhouse 1st Director U.S. Mint;" a one cent coin with a flowing hair liberty on the front and chain link on back. The first coin minted under the Coinage Act of 1792 or Mint Act, labeled "Liberty 1793;" and a half cent coin that is slightly smaller and also labeled "Liberty 1793."

A parody of the nursery rhyme styled upon eighteenth century children's chapbooks making fun of Jefferson's retirement at a time of national crisis. The figures are rough allegories of Jefferson (alternately a king then a priest, retiring to a "Mountain" [Monticello] to study philosophy), the American navy (de-commissioned by Jefferson), the Embargo, the British Fleet and the American volunteer army.
