Two other officers stand behind the table and face the camera.

Two officers and a civilian stand on the steps of the "Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners." The officer on the right is Gen. William Hoffman. The office itself was located in Washington, D.C. at F. St. and 20th NW. The address on the building reads "148."A man and a young boy stand just inside the doorway and another man looks out the window on the right. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." The outer walls of the fort extend across the image, bordered at its base by the outer wooden stockade. There is a lone man in the center of the image and a cannon is barely visible between the center mounds of sand of the fortification in the background. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." The image shows a line of sharpened posts that constitute the outer stockade, running along the base of the wall. The stockade reflects the damage it suffered in the Federal taking of the fort. Three mounds of sand and two cannons are visible. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso "XXII" and "572."

A line of wagons stretches across the image engineers at the head of the teams and drivers seated in the wagons. The wagon covers bear the castle insignia of the engineers. A flag is flying on the left side of the image. Inscripton on verso: "Gardner." Stamp of Century company and the inscription "Gardner" are on verso.
