At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

As lieutenant general, seated, holding cigar, looking to the right. Imprint on recto "Lieut. General U.S. Grant. Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1865, by A. Gardner, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Photographers imprint on verso: "Alex. Gardner, Photographer to the Army of the Potomac.
