He is sending the Draft for $100 he intended to enclose in his previous letter. He quit the mail service a month ago and is planning to go to Nome by way of Seattle. The winds are strong buildings must be propped up to withstand them. He is no longer ill and feels "skookum" again. He hopes the earthquakes, storms, and floods did not hit them too hard.

He is glad Uncle Jesse Knight is taking care of the holdings. Regrets to hear of Heywood's death. Reminds Ed to be "Johnny-on-the-spot" regarding work. Mentions he just had a birthday and is 48. Gives the boys college and nutrition advice. Disucsses a cinnamon dog he bought for his team. Speculates about his plans after Alaska. Says the Guggenheims have their "claws" everywhere.

Discusses working the night shift at the pump house. Asks about the boys' commencement exercises. Thinks Owen would do well in the educational field. Resumed his correspondence course but has switched into the Stationary Engineers Course. Promises to send them $150 and mentions their recent visit. Expects Carol to be a pianist. He is surprised that the level of the Salt Lake has risen. Reports that an officer "smashed" his nose demonstrating how to carry a 200 lb sack of coal.

The snow and storm have made it quite dark. Reports that he periodically gets up to make a fire while Ben tends to the horses and together they bought and share a cross cut saw. The ice stretched 500 feet out from the shore. Says he intended to send them a gold nugget but forgot. Written on Alaska Goldmining Company stationary.

Writes that the Paris-New York Automobile Contest will reach Nome next winter. Regrets Roosevelt is not running in this year's presidential election because "he has certainly proved himself to be the man of the hour." Thinks Taft "will be the best" and likes Bryan but thinks he has little chance of winning. Rejects Cummings and La Follette. Believes the trusts will try to elect a president who will favor them but be bad for the people. States he voted for Garfield who was the "middle one of our martyred presidents," and mentions that Owen will be able to vote in this election.

He has not written because he was busy and waiting for the Ohio which was delayed by the ice until the Thetis went in search of her. He has attended ballgames that begin at 8 pm and end before sundown. He is sending a Draft for $300 to be divided amongst the children. Due to the Presidential election, he does not expect the "financial horizon" to improve until next year.

Responds to Captain Edward Burbeck's letter regarding Lieutenant John Edes' plans to leave the Continental Army (see GLC02437.00301). Knox does not object but must wait for George Washington to return from Philadelphia before a discharge can be issued. Places Edward Burbeck in charge of Edes' company. Indicates that he sent the pay certificate for Edward Burbeck's company, as requested. Asks that Colonel William Burbeck be informed that his pay has been given to his son, Lieutenant Henry Burbeck. Knox signed with his initials on the right hand corner of the first page.

Lieutenant Colonel Mason relates intelligence from a private in the General's Guard named Lara Fraga, who claims several men in Captain Alexander Hamilton's company have enlisted in the "minesterall troops," meaning the Ministerial or British army. On the verso, the letter is titled: "On the Publick Service." The Elizabethtown Committee informs George Washington that the British have landed on Staten Island and proceeded to within two miles of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The militia is gathering but the area is threatened. They are in need of artillery and request supplies from Washington. A post script specifies that their cannon bore is exactly 2.5 inches in diameter. Woodruff was the chairman of the committee. Possibly forwarded to Henry Knox because he commanded the artillery.

Notes that he received William's account of stock resulting from the plunder of British troops. Discusses notes that must be paid that pertain to personal business. Asks William to send him money to buy a carriage, so that Lucy Knox can leave New York quickly if there is danger. Also asks him to send uniform buttons he previously wrote about (see GLC02437.00275). Wants William to keep him informed on what is done with the confiscated Tory estates. Requests a copy of Edes and Gill's monday newspaper. The British had left many supplies in Boston when they evacuated in March, 1776.
